Kootenay Lake and West Arm
Main Lake.
The lake is 67 miles long from Kootenay Landing in the south, to Argenta in the north.
It's width varies from 3/4 wide at its narrowest point in the North Arm, to its widest 3 1/2 mile at Sanka in the South Arm The
Lake depth varies from 270 ft at the North end, to 504 ft in the South Arm.
From just south of Kaslo, the overall lake depth exceeds 400 ft with a reasonably flat bottom.
It has a steep drop off on each side and no shallows to be avoided unless approaching the shore.
West Arm
The navigable portion extends approximately 21 miles, from the outflow of the main lake at Balfour, to Grohman Narrows west of Nelson.
There are extensive shallows and 4 sets of narrows along this arm of the lake.
The navigable channel is well defined with red or green day marks and lights mounted on 11 dolphins.
Anyone not familiar with the area should pay close attention to the "Sailing Directions" (for all boaters) and sheets 9,10,11&12 included in :-
