The Kootenay Lake Ferry is the worlds longest FREE ferry service and operates 20 hours a day 365 days a year.
Balfour is the  Western terminal which is connected to Nelson by Highway 3a
Kootenay Bay is the East Shore terminal and is connected to Creston by a continuation of Highway 3a.
