On Saturday July 8th, 2006 the Castlegar and Nelson Squadrons of CPS
held a joint “Change of Watch” at Camp Lourdes, the home of Vern Hellekson
and Nancy Trevison.
The Pledging of Squadron Commanders, Mike Fairweather (Castlegar) and
Bill Bevan (Nelson), was conducted by CPS District Commander Ken Yoxall.
After the formalities, the squadron members and guests present were treated
to a BBQ provided by the Castlegar Squadron as part of their 40th anniversary
celebration. For this occasion Commanders Bill and Mike received temporary
promotion to “BBQ Cook”, and proved that they were well qualified for the position.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the opportunity to tour the
100ft long x 25ft beam ship that Vern is building.
A year and a half ago, Captain Vern decided that the time was right to get back
to work on his charter- tour boat venture. Since then he has made substantial
changes to the previous layout of the boat.
He has lowered the whole superstructure by three feet. replacing the previous
staterooms below the main deck with 5 watertight bulkheads for additional safety.
He then added a 35' promenade deck and extended the wheelhouse by 11 feet.
These changes provide for 8 staterooms each with it's own washroom, a lounge,
a dining room, a bar and a full galley. The intent is to provide all inclusive charters
on Kootenay Lake and the West Arm. If all goes as planned Vern will start fitting
the ship out to a luxurious state as well as meeting all the safety requirements
that are called for.
The Nelson and Castlegar Squadrons of CPS thank Vern and Nancy for their hospitality
and wish Vern every success in his great venture.
